The inflorescences are terminal and arranged in interrupted racemes, with 6 or more flowers in each whorl; the rachis is long and densely pubescent; the bracts are ovate and small, with hairy edges; the calyx is tubular, with 5 lobes at the apex. The upper one is extra large, nearly round, and the other four are smaller and sharply triangular; the corolla is 2-lipped, white or light red; 4 stamens, 2 strong; ovary 4-lobed. 4 small nuts, nearly spherical, dark brown. The single leaves are opposite, with long oval leaflets, 5-10 cm long, wedge-shaped base, blunt or coarsely serrated edges, and glandular spots on the back of the leaves. Verticillary inflorescence, with more than 10 whorls of florets forming a spike. Flowers are small, white or yellow-white. Nutlets are nearly spherical in shape. Clove basil is native to Seychelles and Comoros in Africa. Introduced into China in 1956, it is cultivated as an annual in the north and as a subshrub in the south of the Yangtze River. It likes a warm and humid environment with plenty of rain. Propagate by seeds, root divisions or cuttings. Sow 0.5 kg of seeds per acre, with a spacing of 50cm × 65cm between rows. For production and cultivation in Guangdong and Fujian, the aboveground parts are cut off and distilled when all the inflorescences appear 60 to 75 days after planting. Strengthen fertilizer and water management. Harvested and distilled three more times in August, mid-October and late November. The average oil yield is 0.37% ~ 0.77%.
