What is Anise Oil?

The dried fruit of the Umbelliferae plant Pippinellaanisum L. It is light blue-grey in color, oval in shape, usually with a small section of stem, very small, and contains about 200000 fruits per kilogram. There are five fruit petals inside, each with one seed inside (hence commonly referred to as “big fennel seed”, not exact). Slightly sweet, with a licorice like aroma, resembling star anise, but with vastly different shapes and sizes. Originating from Egypt, it is also found in southern Europe, Central and South America, northeastern Africa, and India. The quality is best among Spanish producers.

Anise oil can be obtained from fruits by steam distillation or supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. The yield of essential oils is influenced by growth conditions and extraction processes, with supercritical extraction having a higher efficiency. Regardless of the separation method used, the main component of the oil is anethole (80-90%), with secondary components including 4-anisaldehyde, artemisinin, and 2-methylbutyrate pseudoisobutyrate. In 2008, Orav et al. found that the extracted oil accounted for 2-6% of the weight of the raw seeds, of which 74-94% was trans anethole, and the rest was artemisinin (methyl capsaicin), anisaldehyde, and γ- Ximahalin Anethole is the source of the unique aroma and flavor of fennel.

Anise Oil Uses

Spices. Whole grains are used for cooking seasonings and soups; powdered ones are used for meat products, etc. Also used for extracting essential oils.

Anise oil is mainly used to extract anethole, and is also used to prepare flavoring agents for beverages, food, tobacco, etc., and in medicine.

China GB 2760-96 stipulates that edible spices are allowed to be used. It is mostly used in baked goods, candies, alcohol, carbonated drinks, tobacco, etc. It is also a raw material for extracting edible anethole and anisaldehyde.

Anise oil can be used in baked goods, candies, carbonated drinks, alcohol, toothpaste and tobacco. The dosage is 230 mg/kg in baked goods; 190 mg/kg in candies; 98 mg/kg in cold drinks; 50 mg/kg in alcoholic beverages; 20 to 55 mg/kg in meat; 12 mg/kg in beverages; and 8.0 mg in syrup. /kg. In fact, the main use is to isolate anishole from it and further process it into anisaldehyde and anisyl alcohol.
